Periodic alternation between intake and exhaust of air in dynamic insulation

Dynamic insulation (DI) can recover heat lost in conduction by drawing cold outdoor air into indoor through an insulation wall in winter. A “breathing DI” system we proposed in the past has functions both as an insulated envelope and as a highly efficient heat exchanger for ventilation. It is alternated periodically that the outdoor air is drawn through half of walls made of breathable inorganic concrete (BIC) and the indoor air is exhausted through the other half of the BIC walls. In order to put the breathing DI system into practice in housing construction, this paper presents some studies from various points of view in addition to the past studies on heat and moisture transport based on laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. We first experimentally studied the filtering efficiency and clogging of a BIC panel. This showed that approximately 30 % of the atmospheric dust can be captured by a BIC panel and no clogging would occur for at least 10 years. We also measured the sorption and desorption of formaldehyde by a BIC panel to confirm the effectiveness of a BIC wall to sorb gaseous state formaldehyde. We furthermore constructed a new test house at Ibaraki, Japan, to confirm the thermal performance of the breathing DI system based on full scale experiments

Long-term complete remission of early hematological relapse after discontinuation of immunosuppressants following allogeneic transplantation for Sezary syndrome

Sezary syndrome (SS) is a leukemic form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and is chemo-resistant. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a promising therapy for SS; however, relapse is common. Therapeutic options after relapse have not been established. We managed an SS patient with hematological relapse within one month after transplantation. After discontinuation of immunosuppressants, she achieved complete remission and remained relapse-free. The chimeric analyses of Tcells showed that the full recipient type became complete donor chimera after immunological symptoms. This clinical course suggested that discontinuation of immunosuppressants may result in a graftversus- tumor effect, leading to the eradication of lymphoma cells

Successful intrathecal chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy followed by pomalidomide and low-dose dexamethasone maintenance therapy for a primary plasma cell leukemia patient

Primary plasma cell leukemia (PPCL) is a rare aggressive variant of plasma cell disorder and frequently presents with extramedullary disease. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement with PPCL has an extremely poor prognosis. We describe a 46-year-old man with PPCL treated with a combination of lenalidomide, bortezomib, and dexamethasone as induction therapy following upfront allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). Despite achieving a very good partial response, the patient suffered from an isolated CNS relapse 12 months after allo-SCT. He was immediately started on concurrent intrathecal chemotherapy (IT) and cranial irradiation (RT). Subsequently, pomalidomide and low-dose dexamethasone (Pd) were given as maintenance therapy. He has been without CNS recurrence for more than 18 months. Our case suggests that concurrent IT and RT followed by Pd maintenance therapy may be an effective option to control CNS relapse of PPCL after allo-SCT

Based on arthroscopic findings in patients with temporomandibular joint arthrosis, the present study divided the synovial membrane in the upper joint cavity into anterior and posterior sections in relation to the articular disc. The relationship between temporomandibular arthralgia and site of synovitis was investigated. Temporomandibular arthralgia was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale, and severity of arthralgia during resting, mouth opening, protrusive movement, lateral movement, clenching and occlusion was quantified. Results:A correlation was observed between synovitis and temporomandibular arthralgia (p<0.01). Synovitis occurred most often in the posterior section, followed by the posterior region of the anterior section, and anterior section, respectively. Anterior synovitis correlated to pain during mouth opening, protrusive movement, lateral movement of the affected side, and lateral movement of the normal side. Posterior synovitis was associated with pain during mouth opening, protrusive movement, lateral movement of the affected side and occlusion. Degree of arthralgia during mouth opening associated with posterior synovitis was significantly worse than that associated with anterior synovitis (p<0.05). However, the degree of correlation between synovitis and pain at rest and during clenching was low

The aim of interviewing anyone who had been involved in the technological development and dissemination of “ Wakame” seaweed aquaculture in Naruto, was to record for posterity our ancestor’s efforts and history of Wakame seaweed aquaculture. As the investigation went on, the surge of enthusiasm for our wakame seaweed farming ancestors, who were striving to improve the life of fishermen, became clear as the result.Next, we realized that using educational materials for development of science and technology in close contact with such areas, contributes to render improvement of human life possible
